getting engagedYou’ve found your true love and want to ask her to get engaged to be married. You’re not sure how to ask her or when you should ask her. Read more to find out how to get engaged…

Before you get engaged

Before you even think about getting engaged you need to give it some serious thought. Are you really compatible? Do you have enough common interests? Can you really see a future together? Do you have different religions, or come from different cultural backgrounds? Even if you are madly in love you have to think of the future. The initial passions of love will wear off and if there is nothing to hold the relationship together then there is a high chance that it won’t last.

It used to be traditional to ask the father’s permission to marry his daughter, but is is it still relevant today? Asking for permission shows respect and honour for both her and her parents and can be a lovely gesture.

Engagement proposal ideas.

How do you ask your girlfriend to get engaged? The best thing is to spend time thinking about what to say in advance. Don’t try and learn a speech off by heart, but make some notes. Trying to memorise words will make you sound false and you will never remember it all.

Think back to when you first met and what it was about her that inspired you and made you want to start dating her. When did you realise that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with her?

Do you go down on one knee?

Many women had childhood fantasies about their knight in shining armour going down on one knee asking her to marry him. It’s romantic and traditional, so even in today’s fast paced world it’s still relevant and will bring her to tears (hopefully in a good way!)

When is the right time to ask your girlfriend to get engaged?

Some couples are only together a short time before they realise they are deeply in love and want to get married. However it’s always best to give it time. Don’t rush into marriage before you’re both ready. Of course only ask her if you are sure she feels the same. Choose a time to ask her when you’re both relaxed such as on holiday together.

Propose on the beach under the stars, or in a hot air balloon ride. You could plan a romantic candle lit dinner in an intimate restaurant and place the ring in a glass of champagne. Make sure she doesn’t swallow it though! You could even ask her in a public place such as on a train or plane. Just do what feels right for you.

How To Propose To Your Girlfriend Or Boyfriend

How to choose an engagement ring

Before you propose to your girlfriend you will want to buy an engagement ring. Choosing the ring should be an enjoyable experience, but knowing what to look for and sticking to your budget is important. Some guys prefer to buy a proper engagement ring after they have proposed, and make the buying of the ring a joint decision. Your girlfriend will have her own personal taste in jewellery and if you are keen to buy the ring on your own, you should be aware of this.

The “band” is the ring itself which holds the gemstone or diamond. You can choose from either silver, white gold, pure gold or platinum. The most popular gemstone on an engagement ring is a diamond. The size of a diamond is measured in carats, and the larger the diamond the greater the greater number of carats. A carat is valued at 100 points. Large size diamonds don’t necessarily mean they are more valuable. A diamond with few facets and dull in colour will have a lower value than a small diamond with a brilliant white colour and lots of facets that reflect the light.

Sapphire stones are also very popular at the moment since Kate Middleton was seen wearing Prince William’s late mother Diana’s sapphire engagement ring.

Buying an engagement ring on a budget

Firstly decide how much you can afford and don’t be tempted to go over that amount. Starting off life together in debt isn’t something you want to do!
Spend time looking at engagement rings online, in high street jewellers and in antique shops. Find a jeweller who will spend time advising and helping you. Ask married friends where they purchased their rings.

Buying an antique ring

Antique engagement rings are unique and have character. They often have diamonds that are of a higher quality and you can choose from art deco, Victorian, or any other historical period. Don’t feel that you have to choose an engagement or wedding ring that conforms to what it should look like. Be original.

how to announce your engagement

After your girlfriend has said yes to your proposal you will want to spend some time just enjoying the moment before you start telling friends and family.

Those closest to you should be the first to know. Any children from a previous marriage, and parents should be told first.

You could decide to announce your engagement formally by placing an announcement in your local paper. You could post cards, or why not set up your own blog dedicated to your engagement and forthcoming wedding. Place all updates, and even add a story of how you both met.

holding an engagement party

You could hold a party to announce the engagement, or you could hold the party as an engaged couple. It was once traditional for the bride’s parents to pay for the engagement party, but things are different today. You may decide to pay the costs yourself, or you may get some help from other members of the family.

You could hold the party at home in your back garden and have an informal barbeque. Alternatively you could hire a local venue and hire caterers. It all depends on your budget and the number of guests you will be expecting.
